The most effective way to help your family enjoy healthy smiles is to practice good oral hygiene at home! Our pediatric dentist and team can help you learn the proper techniques for dental home care when you bring your child to our office. We invite you to call Smile Big Pediatric Dentistry at 713-697-6453 to learn more about oral hygiene in Humble, Texas, or to schedule an appointment with Dr. Shannon De Vera.
Our team is dedicated to providing excellent dental treatment to our little patients, but there is truly no substitute for great oral hygiene habits at home. Kids’ teeth are especially prone to decay and other issues, so establishing consistent oral health routines is crucial. These include a number of simple daily activities that help keep smiles healthy and bright. Our pediatric dentist recommends following these basic steps with your kids:
- Brush at least twice a day. Getting kids to brush can sometimes be a little taxing, but this is the first step toward of lifetime of oral health. It helps to establish a routine early, even before a child’s first teeth erupt. Make it fun by singing songs or playing small games. Children typically don’t have the dexterity to brush effectively on their own until age 5 or 6, so you’ll need to help or monitor brushing until then. Use soft-bristled toothbrushes and toothpaste that contains fluoride.
- Floss daily. Begin gently flossing your child’s teeth as soon as two touch.
- Don’t forget the diet! Limiting intake of sugary treats and acidic foods and juices also helps prevent tooth decay.
During your visit, our team will go over any recommended changes to your family’s oral hygiene routine, and practice good technique with your kids. To learn more about oral home care, we invite you to call or visit us today!
